NORC at the University of Chicago is conducting a survey sponsored by the National Institute of Justice. This survey is part of a larger study that will help us understand how members of the LGBTQ+ population make decisions to report hate crimes to the police. We want to understand LGBTQ+ individuals' experiences so we can better identify policy and procedural recommendations for law enforcement to increase hate crime reporting and in so doing better serve LGBTQ+ communities.
The survey will take about 20 minutes to complete. The survey will include questions about who you are, your community, your experiences with and views of the police, and types of peer and family support you might have. We also ask about how you think about reporting hate crimes and your experiences with discrimination and harassment. There are no risks in participating in this research beyond those experienced in everyday life. However, the interview will require you to draw upon experiences related to the topics mentioned earlier that may be distressing.
The information you provide is confidential and will be maintained in a secure manner. No one will know how you answered the questions. Only project staff will have access to the study data. The data we collect from you will be combined with data from other participants. De-identified study data will be archived at the National Archive for Criminal Justice Data.
Participation is voluntary. You may skip questions you do not want to answer, and you can stop the survey at any time. There are no risks to participation beyond those experienced in everyday life. Eligible participants who complete the survey will receive a $10 Amazon gift card. Any data that is found to be fraudulent (e.g., attempts to complete the survey multiple times) will be removed and the $10 Amazon gift card will not be provided.
